In OLD IMMIGRANT SCUM, Daniel Ruanova reimagines national symbols as a field of conflict and reinvention. What begins as a flag — a mutant descendant of the EU’s circle of stars — transforms into a pentagon of white stars, echoing the evolution of the American flag and gesturing toward the speculative territory of El Norte: a future transnational union born from migration, tension, and democracy.
The phrase OLD IMMIGRANT SCUM — painted in cartoonist typography — acts as both insult and declaration, reclaiming language once used to exclude. A fractured pixel field abstracts the Battle of Iwo Jima, revealing how nationalism, violence, and spectacle merge within collective memory. The work collides red-and-white imperial stripes with a distorted corporate logo, forming a new flag for fractured identities and hybrid futures.
Painted in 2016, this piece belongs to Ruanova’s series Heraldry for the Northern Border, constructing symbols for a nation yet to come — one forged through irony, migration, and resistance.
